For the OP...
Back in 2009, I bought a secure shoulder bag - the Pacsafe MetroSafe 200 Anti-Theft Shoulder Bag - specially for a trip to Japan. I liked it so much that I've used it as my daily handbag ever since. It's showing virtually no sign of wear and it's the ideal carrier for my Kindle.
It accommodates a lot, even though it gives the impression of being very compact.
- Outer snap pockets: keys, my cheapo little clamshell cellphone.
- Main compartment: wallet, iPod, Kindle, tissues, notebook, pens, two flash drives in a hard-sided lipstick case. Occasionally my camera goes in there too.
- Inner zipper pocket: Tums (for husband when dining out!), ibuprofen, "feminine needs" stuff, lipstick/lipbalm, small sunscreen, etc. Oh yeah: and earplugs for the cinema. Very important.
- Outer zipper pocket (against body): folded-up shopping bags, swipe card for the office.
My shoulder bag is sober black and is the envy of my husband, who may be getting one as a surprise one of these days. Should you prefer colour, it's also available from the Pacsafe site in Deep Chocolate, Forest, Grape Wine and Moroccan Blue. I thought it was a bit pricey when I bought it, but - no regrets now. It's a durable little thing and is hands down the best bag I've ever owned. (Will be getting a netbook one of these days, though, so I may have to go up to the MetroSafe 250 at that point )
