A couple things. 1) What is the indicated signal strength? 2) Do you have background data enabled? (Settings>Accounts & Sync>Background data).
The wifi receiver on my IQ seems to be significantly weaker than my laptop (right now my laptop has almost full bars while the IQ has one). But it really should connect when you're three feet away.
