You're not very good with analogies, are you?
That an e-book stops working when a specific reader device breaks is more similar to that a p-book stops working when a specific pair of glasses break.
People expect to be able to get a new pair of glasses (any make/model) and have all their p-books "working" with the new glasses, and similarly people
should expect to be able to get a new reading device (any make/model) and have all their e-books working with the new device.
