Personally, I do think that the Kindle 3 is a great device, but it's biggest advantage is the Amazon store. If you take that away (i.e. if you live in a country where you can't buy from the Amazon store), I really don't see any advantage to owning the Kindle, as it really doesn't read all that many formats. For reading PDFs you are probably best off with a Sony, but if you don't like the design there are other brands that you can look into, such as Pocketbook. Pocketbook devices don't have the new Pearl screen, but they do read many formats, including PDF and epub, and there are touchscreen versions of their new models (you have to use a stylus, however).
