Left or Right

If you are about to step in mud (stinking & toxic) that's going to be knee high - which foot should you put forward first? Is there a right left foot or is that the wrong one? Or if you decide on left and then use the right one - is that still right? Do two lefts make a right? (and does the hobble in between count?)

I can't remember which one I stepped into the soup first but it was the wrong one I ended up on my knees in the mud and was filthy before i started. So which one do you recommend?
