Frank Herbert left extensive notes about the Dune universe. This included a full history leading up to Dune and things that happened in between. Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson have used these notes for all the Dune books they have written, so a little bit of Frank Herbert is in each and every one of the books. I'll check out Paul of Dune, I've read almost all the others.
