Frankly, I was divided whether to get the Kindle or not, as well as for its longevity. My Sony PRS-505 is made of aluminium and is built like a tank. The Kindle seems flimsy and while I have ordered a case for it, I am very happy to know that in case I have any trouble with it, Amazon has a fairly good attitude towards supporting it.
if you use it as a frisbee or tap dance on it, sure, you will have a problem, but they are fairly rugged little units
