Again, I have to ask what is 'knowing'?

If I were friends with an author, I probably wouldn't review the book because I'm honest enough with myself to know that the friendship would color my review.

I haven't asked any of my friends to review my book for the same reason.

Technically, I 'know' Lois McMaster Bujold - I've had lunch with her twice and I've even knitted hats for her, but we're not friends and I don't socialize with her - I consider myself just a fan and so have no compunction about reviewing her books without revealing that I 'know' her.
