What exactly do you mean by "OK"?
Do you mean legal? It is certainly legal. However there may be ethical concerns if you are going to be biased toward the authors books based on your acquaintance with him. I know for a fact that authors on Amazon.com pay people to review their books positively as well as trade positive reviews with other authors.
