It doesn't really overlap when positioned at the top, I just stick it on the side out of habit. I also use this light with my Kindle DX, and side placement works best to evenly illuminate its ginormous screen. The PRS-950 is smaller, and top placement works just as well.
The inside (back and clip) are padded with silicone (or some other grippy and slightly squishy material). Between the pads and the spring-loaded clip, I've found the light to be very secure on these devices: PRS-350, PRS-950, Kindle2, Kindle DX. I thought the light was too loose for the Kindle 3 (it stayed on, but wobbled when I shifted positions).
For storage, the light tucks into the clip and the neck makes a loop above the battery pack.
