How does it do that?
From what I understand: The lighted kindle and the non-lighted kindle covers both have tabs that swivel into the slots on the edge of the device. The lighted kindle receives the power for the light by the top tab touching a source of current inside the device. When they made the non lighted cover, the length of the tab was not changed so it still touches this power source. You can think of it like a wall outlet... if you put a plug with metal prongs into a wall outlet it will power the device that it is attached to. If you put a metal fork into a wall outlet, the results are quite different.
