Earthy, to me it means simple, basic, not flavored, not smoked, just natural. I think most of us have had grass type plants in or lives so we know what grassy is. Earthy is similar, in the sense that the tea has not been mucked with, but doesn't taste grassy.

I have played softball for 30 years so I have eaten some dirt. The dirt itself doesn't taste bad, just gritty. The good news is that Pu-erh is not gritty, just earthy. (grins)
