Did you get the "30 seconds per book" number by actually opening the job details window?

This is a totally different symptom. Did you open the job details window and see what books were actually holding you up? Books convert serially so it seems as if you had two books that were taking a long time to convert. I doubt if 'Smarten Punctuation' was a determinant in slowing down either of these books.

Maybe a bug, maybe not. You have to check what was going on with each of these books. Click on the Jobs in the lower right corner to view the job log.
