the industry chose ePub when it could have chosen mobi. sort of like the movie industry supporting blu ray instead of hd dvd.

Mobi is now a small player as where ePub is now the major player. Sounds like they all made sound business decisions.
The industry chose EPub to try and put pressure on Amazon. They are hoping that people buy into the EPub vs Mobi BS and that they can, collectivly, reduce Amazons ebook share.

Mobi is still the dominant player based on number of ebooks sold. Just because more places sell EPub does not mean that 1) there are more epub books avaialble or 2) that EPub is dominant.
