I have had an opportunity to play with Kindle 3, which is in my opinion much better than K2 or K1. Let's say it was...unpleasant. It felt as if I were holding a big & ugly calculator from 1980s I had in a Soviet school. Very much un-enjoyable experience. That particular experience proved to me that I pay thr right price for something I truly enjoy.
When I read a book everything around me is a part of the reading experience. For example I hated paperback editions. To see the text properly I had to break the spine. No other way to have the page flat in a 600+ pages paperback. However, breaking book's spine is an atrocity because I was brought up with a sense that you look well after your books, they are no toys but a valuable possession. That's why I was buying hardback editions.
Sony Reader's superb hardware provides me with what I need. A pleasure when I hold it in my hands. I do not notice I hold a gadget. It is a very important feature for me for which I am prepared to pay premium price.
