@ Stitchawl + latinandgreek: I think English is the easiest language for anyone familiar with Latin alphabet. that's why they call it 'international language'. Fewer articles, no noun genders, logical grammar and word families... at least it's easier than study Chinese

I think English being the international language is the reason that it's easier to learn. I was listening to people speaking English on the television and radio from a very early age, which means I was sort of used to the sound of it by the time I started studying the language in school. I've always found English much easier to speak, write and read than French.
