Thanks Pholy, that's a good suggestion. I haven't checked in with my son yet on the USB so hopefully it's working again. I'm happy to say that someone at Kobo has suggested my bringing the laptop and Kobo into their Toronto location and they will check things out for me. Keep your fingers crossed!
