The first ebooks I bought were Microsoft Reader format (remember that) followed by eReader. Both formats are moribund now, if not quite extinct. I only started buying ePub and Kindle titles when I was sure I could remove the DRM and use the books on future devices. As with the majority of folks on this site I use it to ensure the longevity of my purchases, not for distribution of unprotected copies
