I just bought one from Tmobile WITHOUT contract.

... I do have to pay about 40 but I can cancel anytime without penalty. If that happen, it can be used as wifi device only, without 3G access.
Also, don't go for ATT or Verizon (no, I don't work for Tmobile) but Tmobile one has the Bluetooth option unlocked and it's not bloated with crappy ATT or Verizon apps. Tmobile 3G data connection is unlimited, on Verizon and ATT you pay per Byte.
