Yes, Sony and Borders both have DRM like Amazon. The difference is that Sony and Borders use the same type of DRM and that's why you can read Borders books on your Sony. Amazon uses a different type of DRM.
Even the free Sony books have DRM. When the book is open on your ereader, select Options and then Info. At the bottom of the list, you will see something like "Digital Rights Full, Viewable" on a DRM book. On a book without DRM, there will not be a category called "Digital Rights" in the list. The free books that I have from Borders also have DRM. I do not have any books from smashwords so I can't comment.
