I agree.
Disk I/O error is bad hardware (drive,cable,PSU) or damaged file system
If you have a UBUNTU Live CD handy, boot that and use "disk Utility" to view your drives "S.M.A.R.T. status (the hardware, not the file system)
Using the Live CD does not require making any changes to your system (don't click Install, Nor change any drive partition while peeking)
