Back to the beach: I just spent a week on the beach with my Kindle in a simple M-Edge case, and had no problem with sand. I put it in a simple beach bag with my camera when I went for a swim. In a regular case, the speaker holes are covered. I understand using a zip-lock bag for reading in the bath, but I wouldn't worry too much about the beach. Just put it in your beach bag when you put it down.
