If the hardware is capable of doing a thing it should do it.
This isn't the 1980s where we walk around with brick sat phones, we use multipurpose devices.

My cellphone has a notepad/calendar/stopwatch/mp3player/camera/video recorder/webbrowser/ereader.. and it also works as a phone, yet I use all of these features when it is convenient for me, and it does everything well enough. I don't need to "make calls like a superstar," I just need to get done what I want to do, and more functionality is better.

These features are all software additions to the phone, and not required for its operation, same thing with the e-reader, it's just a matter of implementing them.

If you want to stick your head in the ground and live in the dark, I won't stop you, but the 80's...
