Boot up is around 8-10 seconds on average, PDF's are ok but nothing special - I used calibre to convert some to epub (as generic) and they were better indeed - worth a try for £70 -you can always take it back if it is not 'working properly'!
I am quite happy with mine but I have never tried any other reader.
