I never saw anyone else do it either. But I was a pre-teen with a real sweet tooth, and it was a way for me to get my sugar fix without my parents yelling at me for eating candy!

These days I only use sugar when cooking, and even then, very little. Every once in a blue moon I'll mix up some lime juice, lemon juice, ice, and water and add a sweetener to that, but it's usually gum syrup rather than sugar. That's the usual sweetener here for cold drinks.
