Books Read in 2011 (Moved over from the group)

1. Oracle of the Dead by John Maddox Roberts (Book 12 in SPQR Series)

216 pages. A mystery set in Ancient Rome. The series highlights the memoirs of a mythical Roman aristocrat in the years before and after Julius Caesar became dictator of Rome.

Decius Caecelius Metellus is currently touring Italy as the magistrate for cases involving foreigners. During a visit to an oracle in southern Italy, a priest of a rival religion is killed, and the local populace is ripe for violence as "Greeks, Romans and native Italians of several conquered nations bring out old enmities."

2. The Spice Necklace by Ann Vanderhoof

480 pages. Approximately 10 years ago, Ann and her husband Steve purchased a sailboat, left their jobs, and spent 2 years visiting the Caribbean (chronicled in An Embarrassment of Mangoes). Now, years later, they return to the Caribbean to reunite with old friends and explore the local cuisine, native plants and spices.

I really enjoyed this book! It has inspired me to purchases a nutmeg grinder, look for Grenadian cocoa balls, drink more rum, and think about visiting the islands.
