You got it right. Not just hot beverages, but any food very hot. Stand-up noodle stands sell their bowls of udon, ramen, and soba in a boiling soup and the people just about pour it down their throats. It's the 'real' fast food of Japan as it takes them less than a minute or two to devour a whole bowl despite the brutal heat of the liquid. I have to put an ice cube or two in mine just to bring it down to 75-80 so I can eat it! I have 'cat's mouth!'
