I've finally gotten into the groove of prolonged reading after I stopped moaning and groaning about the shortcomings of the stock homescreen, reader, and library (including the non-calibre-recognizing shelves).

Like you I was doing this and that, barely reading. I've reached a plateau since installing the Aldiko reader (version 2). The fact that I no longer care about the shortcomings of the stock device (because I rarely access those features now) allows me to actually enjoy the device on all levels. It's customized to suit my needs.
