For me it was a scene in The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. The scene in the bedroom where the two women share a bed because some unkown thing was in the room.

Also Susan Hill's The Woman in Black although I think mainly because I just saw the play and that was scary too (seen it 3 times now and it's still scary). Both are scary because you don't know exactly what is causing the haunting and what it's motives are.
