Unfortunately Kindles are designed to read the Amazon proprietary format azw, and can also read mobi, but cannot read epub. You would have to convert epub books to mobi in order to read them on the Kindle, and if they contain copyright enforcement (known around here as DRM or Digital Rights Management) then you would have to remove that first, which is technically illegal. If all this sounds like too much trouble, you may be able to return the Kindle or sell it, then buy a reader which *does* read epubs without conversion, which is pretty much every other device. If you want to see a few in store, you may be near a Borders or A&R, which are selling Kobos and Sonys. Both of these are designed to read epubs.
