That's how I started...and gave up quite a few times. You are doing a lot better my friend
I am different from ProfCrash. She is very experienced in teas, I am barely above the newbie level. Let's say greenhorn or maybe as high as beginner (don't pay too much attention to my rambling. The titles are from rpg I played in 1995 )
I started to investigate in October 2010? when I realised I drink 6 cups of black tea - Yorkshire Gold in bags. I thought it is too much of black tea dust. I started to drink horrible fruit teas in tea bags and whining about it over here. kindlekitten lost her patience with me and ask why do I keep pushing myself and drink tea I hate. Guess what. I re-read 2 of your posts. One about rooibos another about mate and it started

Because of lack of experience I have no choice but try. Just like ProfCrash said it is hit and miss.
I wanted to try rooibos? I went to NBTea website and they have 12? What could I do? I ordered a sample collection Still made a mistake. I have not realised yet that I don't like additional flavours. So, from 12 I have ordered two flavoured and now I know that only straight rooibos is my cup of tea, just like you do

Later, when I visited Bath and its tea shop/room and he seller mentioned the word Mate, I flared up! I knew what he was talking about! I was so happy I even ordered a pot of roasted mate in their tea room out of hundreds teas

Have you noticed how much you influenced my tea drinking style/habit?

Then I wanted to investigate green teas. Again. NBTea--->green tea sample collection---> 3 batches. Green tea from Japan, From China, from Other Origin (this is where Vietnam chimes in )
All green teas were the same for me. I had to try all of them to decide which ones I like or whether they are all the same and different names is only a marketing trick?
I received 24 samples. I loved 3 of them more than the rest:
Sencha - Japan
Dragon Well and White Monkey - China

To investigate a bit more is Bancha and Bancha Houjicha?
My life is easy now with green teas I still have to finish all the samples though I liked almost all of them but the 3 mentioned above were outstanding. It is fun! I am a control freak and this sample tasting allowed me to choose what I like. I don't have to rely on websites' reviews.

Oolong is the next step in my investigation. I have found a sample of Formose oolong in my tea stash and tried it. It was VERY good. Just like you described it It leaves a very clean mouth. My better 2/3s liked it too.

Sorry y'all, guess my palate isn't ready for the tea club
I would not like any of the aforementioned teas, but as dear ProfCrash said I like straight teas. I drunk a lot of teas and cursed for my bad choice before I realised where the problem lies.
As long as you enjoy it, don't give up

Vietnamese Sencha and Vietnamese Lotus Chun Mee. I liked the latter, good green tea but IIRC Vietnamese Sencha was one of the few that I didn't like at all.
I have no clue
