Depends on what features and functions you want anaton. So contrary to public opinion the Kindle is not the best for everyone, depednign on what you want:

- Do you want a touch screen, don't buy a Kindle buy a Sony PRS.
- Do you want to be able to read any format you could possibly come across, don't buy a Kindle get a Jet Book.
- Do you want a reader that is super easy to operate, don't buy a kindle buy a Kobo
- Do you want to pay rock bottom low prices for the reader, don't buy a Kindle buy an Aluratek Libra Pro

If you want one of these features then yes buy the kindle:

- Multilingual dictionaries
- Ability to take notes in the margin
- Ability to put your name in your reader.

So it really depends on what is important to you, and there is no best for everyone.
