Consider Oogy: The Dog Only a Family Could Love. It's non-fiction, the story of a family who took in a dog that had been rescued after being used as a "bait dog" for dogfighting. It's definitely heartwarming.

(I will caution, though, that IMO the first chapter is very poorly written. Get past the first chapter, and the story picks up considerably.)
