Read through it all. Excellent writing, very good story. Downside is the connection with the characters just felt empty as if the upcoming event was the focus and the people were just along for the ride, rather than actual participants in the upcoming event.
My personal preference in scifi is to not have all the technological items already laid out like the DMR, psychic patch, stuff along that nature, but leave it open to interpretation to the reader. Again that is just a personal preference.
