is crond alive during sleep?

Does anyone know whether the crond is killed during sleep? I put some jobs in /etc/crontab/root, but if Kindle has been inactive for a long duration and sleeps, the jobs will not run. Checking the output from ps, it seems crond is restarted when I press the power button. SInce Kindle is capable of fetching from Amazon's server during sleeps, I am wondering whether this is accomplished with crond, or via some other means which escapes my notice?
Thanks in advance!
