Besides epub is the most common ebook format online next to PDF. Mobi is what kindle uses, and it is far less common. Converting is always an option, but it can be problematic if you are working with protected documents (like library books).

Converting is all but a non-issue if one is willing to take the time to learn the process.
Regarding your statement about common formats... I have to wonder what the reality is. If Amazon/Kindle dominates the market with mobi while epub has a wider range of EBRs, then how is common defined? If, say mobi is 60% of the market but only runs on 1 EBR and epub is 40% of the market but runs on all other EBRs, which format is considered the most common? (Those %ages are made up numbers as I have no idea what the reality is).
