If it were to protect the authors work, they'd sell each ebook with a water mark. This way one were able to lend it out, but if it were spread around in hundreds of copies one were liable.

DRM does not restrict the book to one person or even one reader. I share an account with my Mom, she can read any book I have on my Kindle at the same time I am reading said book. Most of the books on my Kindle can be read by up to 6 people at the same time if they share my account.
BN and Amazon allow lending now, yes it is limited and a bit silly, but there is another person who can read a book that I have on my Kindle.
It really doesn't matter what the Publishers think that DRM is accomplishing because it is easy enough to remove the DRM and do what you want with the book.
