Please don't try and pin this on Amazon. Why do companies like BN, Kobo, and Sony persist with it? Sony changed formats around the time the K1 was released. Kobo and Nook came out after Amazon and choose a different format. Hardly Amazon's fault.

DRM is driven by the Publishers. All of the various bookstores sell non-DRMed books. The books that are sold with DRM are sold that way because the author and/or publishers insist on it.
