I think we readers are wired differently. When I read, the words disappear into the story, but Tim, a non-reader, never gets beyond looking at the words. He is so intent on the words that he is reading that he forgets to think about the story.

On the other hand, we read aloud to each other. We listen to audiobooks together. He can follow along just fine like that. He is simply not wired for visual reading comprehension.
