Are there are national lending library services for ebooks - even if I have to pay for a membership? Thanks for any suggestions.

You are in NY State: get a free card at NYPL for eNYPL. Over 15,000 ebooks, but waiting lists there too. I have cards to 3 different library ebook collections - one I have to pay $30 annual fee but worth it. It allows me more options. I often get on wait list for same book and wait for one to pop up. If I really want a book and just can't wait, I go buy it - not often though. I guess bug your library to add extra copies of titles in demand -- they do that for paper books all the time.
