Of the current large screen (9" +) non-backlit e-readers, the Kindle DX seems to have the best screen, while the Pocketbook 902 / 903 seem to have better functionality for reading PDFs, but slightly less contrast. I haven't seen either in person, I'm just commenting based on reviews that I've read. Hope that helps. (I, too, am looking to get a device for PDFs and am still undecided as what to get).
