I love my Kindle, but I would also love an iPad (or one of the forthcoming Android 3 slates) as well. I will probably get one this year for my wife.
I see the Kindle/eink devices as reading devices. They are truly book substitutes for me. The slate would be for web surfing, photos, videos, and more productivity oriented tasks (including PDFs/books with graphics). Although there is some overlap (especially if you have a DX) they are very much two different items.
