The most recent ones (Brandon Sanderson took over writing) don't drag nearly as much as the last few by Jordan, I had the feeling Jordan would drag the cash cow out as long as possible, while Sanderson is really wrapping things up now, each book has a feeling of accomplishment & progress.

You could try the Redwall series - (disclaimer: I haven't read it in many years & there's a lot more books than when I had read them; I mean to get back into them, my siblings still love all the new ones). Basically it's fantasy where all the characters are forest creatures like mice, badgers, etc.
