Canebrake rattlesnakes and timber rattlers are two that have protected status in Virginia. In Florida, Indigo snakes (a type of blacksnake with an unusually wonderful temperament; said to be one of few snakes that actually show affection for those who have them as pets) are protected. I'm sure there are other protected species as well.
