Well, as a fellow knitter I understand the conflict with reading and knitting. I ended up with an IQ. I had originally purchased a Jetbook but had to return it because the SD card slot was not working. I really liked it for reading (no blink at page turn). I ended up getting the IQ for one main reason: I could see my knitting patterns in color and download the pdf files from various sites via wifi. My patterns always get destroyed in my knitting bag so having them in the IQ will help keep them nicer.
I am finding the reading experience acceptable. I have not read an entire book on it yet or downloaded any books - I do find the unit a little heavy for long term reading, the jetbook was very light, but only 5" screen and very basic in features.
My ultimate dream reader is the PB603 when they are available in the US. It is a b&w ereader. It is a WACOM screen (I find I click or move a touch screen when I don't want) so I will like that. I am looking forward to being able to make notations on the knitting patters for sizes, keeping row counts etc right on the pattern and save it. The 603 is wifi and 3G (don't really care about 3G). Also plays MP3s. You might be able to download an application to play other audio files. I am going to try to get my local library audio downloads on the IQ - I'm sure if I can get it on the IQ I will be able to get them onto the 603 when I get it. This is the unit I ultimately wanted, but doesn't have definate release date. My hubby got me the Jetbook then IQ as an anniversary gift. I am hoping to be able to get the pb603 for my birthday (july). If you can wait I would check out the pb603. Good luck in your search. I had a tough time deciding myself.
