Yes it is different from Harry Potter in many ways but the characters are well developed and the magic in it is well explained. A bit denser but an excellent read.

If you looka t Orson Scott Card Iw ould suggest Enders Game and then the Shadow series. I enjoyed Speaker for the Dead but the rest of the books got further away from the story of the kids in Ender's Game. The Shadow Series follows many of the other kids and introduces others quite nicely.

Robin Hobb's Assassins Apprentice series is great. As is the Twany Man and Trader Ships series.
1. I am green with envy that you have such a gorgeous dog.
2. I will definitely try Mists of Avalon. I have been looking to expand on my legends and mythology readings, and this suits my tastes.
