I might have missed it, but did anyone mention that you can create a folder on your Mac called Kindle and move the files on your Kindle to it? This way you could still keep your books, have them for a backup of the original Kindle for as long as that lasts. Same with any other ereader. If you upgrade your Kindle they wouldn't work, but hopefully Amazon would last long enough after you upgraded that you would have time to add your books to the new Kindle.
I also have enough faith in Amazon that even if they do go under they are customercentric (their word) enough to prevent the complete loss that you are talking about. And I also believe that by the time Amazon goes under I will have moved on to a newer and better ereader, holographic maybe?
