That's how I always hold my sony readers. 500, 505 and 650.
I would say having cover is a good safety precaution. It protects screen. At the end of the day eInk is made of glass. There were many complains about broken screen over the year. Although for some people even titanium would not help

Zip bag might be good as an addition to the cover.
I used to have a small bag for my readers in cover. 2 years ago I bought metal DVD case. The best ebook reader accessory

I was always worrying that I might break the screen, before I got the case

Although it is all very personal. Quite a few people adore oberon covers that cost around...£80? Thick and with a side flop that I would not tolerate at all
