it's only books bought from amazon that appear as gibberish numbers.

.mobi format books downloaded from other sources , or converted to mobi with calibre, & then opened by double clicking them will all appear with meaningful names in my kindle content folder

samples requested from amazon Kindle store do not seem to appear at all on the PC though, they go via wifi only to the kindle.
