A lot of people seem to have wild misconceptions about snakes. I have met several people who thought that the "hissing" sounds (though they don't much sound like hissing to me) you hear in fields in the summer are made by snakes. Which is really scary because these sounds (they are in fact made by insects such as grasshoppers) are everywhere, so these people were convinced they were walking in a field infested with snakes ready to bit them!
